TREATMENT FOR SPORTS RELATED INJURIES

ARTHROSCOPY

Arthroscopy procedures are one of the most common forms of surgery performed by sports medicine specialists.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses a fiber optic device called an arthroscope. A few small incisions are made into which the arthroscope and tiny surgical instruments can be inserted. There is no need for cutting any of the tendons or muscles in order for the Orthopedic surgeon to gain access to the affected area. Many different shoulder conditions can be diagnosed and treated through arthroscopy. As a result, the patient experiences less tissue damage, quicker recovery times, minimal scarring, and less discomfort after the procedure.

Shoulder, Elbow, Knee, and Wrist arthroscopy procedures are often performed in order to confirm the diagnosis of imaging and physical examinations. In some cases, the patient can be treated during the arthroscopy procedure. The Orthopedic surgeon need only insert a few additional pencil sized instruments into the area of the targeted joint.

ANTI INFLAMMATORY MEDICATION

Medication also may be prescribed to reduce pain and swelling. In some cases an injection will be used to administer the drug as it can provide immediate relief from inflammation and pain. Cortisone shots are one of the most common injections administered by doctors who practice Sports Medicine.

EXERCISE

An orthopedic surgeon will often prescribe a set of exercises targeting the part of the anatomy that is recovering from injury or surgery. The goal is to regain full strength, range of motion, and endurance so the patient can return to their normal level of activity. The continuation of the exercise routine will also be an important part of preventing future injuries from occurring.

Most exercises can be completed with simple equipment such as resistance bands, small hand weights, squeeze balls, and yoga mats. The idea will be to gradually progress to a normal workout level. This means that a lot of stretching and walking will be involved when starting out.

BASIC STRETCHING

Stretching is one of the first rehab exercises that a patient will be asked to perform. Patients can quickly increase flexibility and range of motion with an effective stretching regiment. Stretching exercises have also been shown to be effective an effective method for strengthening muscles and tendons. As the patient progresses the exercises will be designed to be more challenging.

WARM UP

It is crucial to get in a general warm-up before performing any rehab exercises. Comfortable activities such as 10 to 15 minutes of exercise biking or brisk walking are effective in preparing to begin exercising. The patient should avoid any activity that causes an increase in pain. Someone recovering from a foot injury should not run to get warmed up. A pool based warm-up or exercise biking would be more effective.

RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISES

If the affected area lacks full range of motion then focus on gentle range of motion exercises prior to starting strengthening exercises. These should last three to five minutes and feel comfortable. The patient should not be trying to push through pain. Instead, remain in a range of motion which is painless. OThe range should gradually increase over time.
